the secret to a long life i
...is knowing when it's time to go. Or so says Michelle Shocked. Maybe. Or maybe not. Sounds a bit passive aggessive to me. Isn't it better to stay and fight your demons? Unless of course she's referring to getting out of Dodge before it kills you. In that case, I'm all for leaving.
...is enjoying the passing of time. Or so says James Taylor. I can get behind this one. Except that aren't we all supposed to be mindful? You know, the whole be here now, thing. And technically, you can't really enjoy the passing of time, because once it's gone, it's gone.
...eat well, drink well and sleep. Okay. No arguments with Sheldon Kopp. And to this one, I'd like to add the latest from John Ikerd, who at the Northeast Organic Farmers Association conference in January graciously explained that for we all really do have enough. What's missing is the social factor in all of our economic equations. So, according to John the secret is...
...live well, live wisely and live agreeably. Amen.
Dorothy Bryant famously said that you are not the same person when you finish a novel as you were when you started it. It’s hard to judge for oneself, but Diana documented the six-year-and-still-counting travails/travels at tumblr.
So go on: take a look and make the call yourself.
To Do or Not to Do?
We all have to-do lists.
How about a to-don’t list? Everything you don’t want/need to do, all those things that get in the way of allowing you to get to what you really want to do.
Idea from Daniel Pink. aithor of, great speaker.
His list was pretty bland. No email in the morning. xx
I’m hoping mine would have more panache:
What would yours look like?
Among the many things I find indispensable, in no particular order: gel pens * my big and lovely D40-NT Guild guitar * bicycling * novels * hiking * my beautiful children * breathing in * Cornucopia * breathing out * sustainable food and energy * the Northeaster * my wonderful posse of friends * the Atlantic Ocean-every single wet and salty molecule of it * music music music *
In my dreams people blow into the courthouse like tumbleweeds where they speak their piece and then flip and roll back out into the dusty desert silence as if nothing had ever been said.
Dee Dee McGregor will cry at a row of water grasses set off against a grey sky, she has a sadness so intractable it bursts at all hours with no warning, only to dissipate like a tropical storm sputtering as it hits land, the sun smoking the water off the asphalt, the evidence gone, as if her own storm never was.
The Lonely (?) Shepard
What does he do all day, every day, up there with the sheep? Is he a reader? a writer? I wake up in the morning to the tinkling of the bells as the sheep pass, and in the afternoon I know it’s time for a break when I hear them return. How does he stand the loneliness? Maybe he likes it. Could you do it? Next time you eat some local feta cheese, think of the Shepard and say a little thanks.

You're such an asshole when you're drin
Why is my ass the perfect height for kicking?
Selling the book is an exercise in futility and hope at the same time. Try holdingthose two things at once!!
OLD TEXT
've had some agents/editors consider taking the novel. And more than a few tell me:
"It's not for me but surely someone else will take it and make it a big hit."
Hmm. Is that code for something?
I'm working on a novella that I'm going to submit to Kindle Direct Singles. Kind of curious how that works. If I can sell 50 copies, that would pay, um, like half my summer electric bill in Washington DC. That would be news, right?
Okay. We writers are a desperate lot. We know that.
It's that whole time for money thing...still working on it.
Stay tuned.
